OS TEMAS DE ‘OUMOU’ (2):
OS TEMAS DE ‘OUMOU’ (2): ‘DUGU KAMALEMBA’ (THE WOMANISER; THE SKIRT-CHASER)
This is a song about polygamy. Often the men who take than one wife are the womanisers. They try to seduce anything in a skirt. This was my first real open criticism of polygamy.
Oh the youth of Mali, Oumou Sangare is greeting you. Listen hard to what I have to say, be careful of the skirt chaser, they’ll marry you with all the sweet words of the world.
In Mali, the first wife is usually chosen from within the extended family. So he’ll say to her, the first wife, you are my sister! Even if I marry a second wife, you’re the best because we’re equal, we’re of the same blood. Then he brings a second wife into the home, and he says to her, you’re my favourite, why? You will make me beautiful children. The first onewas given to me by my family, but you are my own choice. The he marries a third wife, and to this new one he says, you are the lucky one in this household. So now there are three wives ar home. The he marries a fourth, and to her he says, you are the very last, and the best. The others are old now, you’re the youngest, that’s it, now I will never marry again! Of course this is true, since he can only have four wives by Muslim law. So this fourth one thinks she’s the best. Then all four wives bicker with each other. The womaniser always has fights at home among the wives.
